Privy and Secret Spots in Paris

by 3:58 PM

Le Quartier Bercy Square Hôtel invites you to discover this Three non-touristy spots in the City of Lights!

THE HOTEL OF SENS

It is a city palace in the Marais, in the IVe arrondissement of Paris, France.

It was originally owned by the archbishops of Sens. The building is in between late Gothic and early Renaissance style, and now houses the Forney art library. This mansion is one of three medieval private residences remaining in Paris. It was built between 1475 and 1507

Built between 1475 and 1507 the Hotel de Sens is one of three medieval private residences remaining in Paris. The façade is an imposing beast, a fortress reminiscent of battles, sieges and armored knights. Henri IV’s ex-wife, Queen Margot, resided here in 1605 to which she lent her slightly demented flair. The building now houses the Forney Art Library and students populate the interior.

It’s free and open to the public but make sure you catch it when it’s open, 1:30 – 8pm, closed Sunday and Monday or you’ll be reduced to fits that you can’t get inside this amazing edifice.

THE MUSEE CARNAVALET OR THE HISTORICAL LEGACY OF PARIS

Behind this somewhat mysterious name is hidden one of the capital’s most genuinely Parisian museums. The oldest of the municipal museums tells the story of Paris from a bygone era (a prehistoric dugout canoe dating from 4600 BC) to the present day, in all its immense variety.

Although it is essentially a history museum, the musée Carnavalet is nevertheless an art gallery exhibiting mostly original works in keeping with the spirit of the genius of Paris.

In a remarkable architectural setting (twotown houses in the Marais district) the story of Paris unfolds in one hundred or so rooms and colourful gardens, which are home to some thousand thriving plant species.

As visitors wander through recreations of rooms in styles ranging from the 17th to the 20th century, they can follow developments in Parisian interior design, immerse themselves in revolutionary history from the French Revolution to the Paris Commune, and also enter into the private lives of famous Parisians, imagining for example, the Marquise de Sévigné at her Chinese laquerwork desk penning her famous missives, or even Marcel Proust in his bedroom, dividing his time between his brass bed and his little table covered in pens, ink and notebooks…

The presence of works of art, the bond created with famous people from varied intellectual, political and artistic backgrounds in the capital and also the emotional impact of the historical scenes are what make this history museum so original and contribute to the unique atmosphere which it conveys of the City of Light down the centuries.

LA PAGODE DE PARIS

La Pagode is a historic movie house that dates from the Belle Epoch period and is decorated in the traditional Japanese style. Originally constructed by the manager of the Bon Marche department store for his wife, it was converted into a ballroom in the 20s before becoming a movie cinema in 1931. Probably my favorite theater in Paris, it’s a perfect distraction to cool a set of flâneur enflamed thighs for a couple hours. The theater shows first-run movies and is submersed in the old style. Don’t forget to enjoy a cup of tea in the Japanese garden before the show. + Info

‘Behind the Seams’ exhibition, Paris

My French Lingerie: ‘Behind the Seams’ exhibition, Paris – passion, corsets & codpieces
August 12, 2013 By Kathryn Kemp-Griffin

My French Lingerie:

While the 17th century French philosopher might have cautioned against the veneer of narcissistic pride, his mathematical faculties would have had to appreciate the engineering prowess underneath the surface of fashion.

Nearly two hundred undergarments on display at the current exhibition ‘Behind The Seams: An Indiscreet Look at the Mechanics of Fashion’ at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs reveal how and to what extent we have contorted our bodies over the centuries. Vanity continues to thrive, both above and below the surface.

The exhibition explores the complex structures that twist, push, tighten, raise, flatten and manipulate our bodies from the 14th century to today. Undergarments such as iron corsets, caged crinolines and fake derrières have transformed women in their pursuit of the perfect silhouette, while codpieces and padded everything have enhanced men’s virility.

Melanie owns ‘Lace Embrace Atelier’ in Vancouver, Canada and I had the pleasure of chatting with her while she was in Paris. Effortlessly charming and, of course, perfectly poised in one of her own handmade corsets, Melanie shared her knowledge and passion. (Said Kathryn Kemp-Griffin)

What come to mind instantly when you think of the ‘corset’?
Love, curve, color;  a powerful, sexy confidence.

What’s so special about French corsets?
My favorite corsets are French. They are beautifully designed and delicately made with the finest lace, silk and intricate flossing. While synonymous with style, there is also a sense of playfulness and coyness to French corsets. I find myself asking questions and wanting to know more about the women who wore them.

3 misconceptions people have about wearing corsets:

1. Corsets are uncomfortable

2. Corsets are bad for your health

3. Why would you want to wear that?

I get great pleasure from lacing people up and watching as they discover their newly-shaped bodies; their tummies flatten, their height increases and their busts lift without any discomfort.

As our conversation comes to an end, I realize that talking about corsets has made me sit up straighter. Melanie smiles knowingly and we agree to meet for a fitting next time she’s in Paris. We say goodbye and as I watch her glide out of the room, I understand the timeless elegance and subtle power of corsets.

KANAKO: free summer exhibition in the streets of Paris

by 11:23 AM
KANAKO  the brilliant illustrator of My Little Paris show us  hilarious posters of the habits and customs of the people in Paris!

It is the last week to see this exposition in the streets of Paris!

Which is the story?

One day, the Paris City came across the drawings of My Little Paris’s book « Les Parisiens », published by the Editions du Chêne. They got an idea: inviting My Little Paris and Kanako to organize an open-air exhibition dedicated to Parisians.

For the entire month of August, the Parisians sketched by Kanako will be displayed on more than 1,000 posters of the city’s billboards network in 3 neighborhoods: Barbès, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Champs-Elysées.

There will be the busy Parisian and the one hanging about at the café. The eternally stressed Parisian and the one dawdling at the market. The romantic Parisian and the heartbroken one. But also the one rushing in the metro or the one running towards a terrace, as soon as the sun shows up…

Magical evenings at the "traditional Paris cabarets"

by 1:19 PM

Le Général Hôtel, your luxury rooms in Paris suggests the following nightlife options!

There are plenty of serious or arty cabaret-theatres in Paris, but we're focusing on the classics here.

Le Quartier Bercy Square Hôtel invites you to discover this two classics!

The "LIDO" CHAMPS ELYSÉES

Paris has always had a reputation as a city of celebration and entertainment.

Located on the most famous avenue in the world, the Champs-Élysées, the Lido and its revues have added sparkle to the « City of Light » and « Paris by night » since 1946.

Come discover the Lido, « the world’s most famous cabaret, » and share the exhilaration and enchantment of a legendary location.

This uninterrupted string of successes led the Lido to move from 78 Champs Elysées to 116 bis in 1977. The new cabaret is at the exit of the George V metro station, in the Normandie building, next to the largest cinema of the period.

The Moulin Rouge

For romantics, no visit to the city of lights would be complete without a night at the original Moulin Rouge cabaret in Paris. Built in 1889, the club was the essence of a bohemian, Belle Epoque Paris, where artists converged to produce and attend colorful and avant- garde performances.

The Moulin Rouge in Paris has inspired scores of Hollywood homages, the most recent being director Baz Luhrman’s 2001 glitz fest starring Nicole Kidman. It also provided inspiration for 19th-century painter Toulouse Lautrec, whose portraits of Moulin Rouge performers are today housed in Paris’ Musee d’Orsay.
